What is it?
Every belt exam has a theory part, and it tends to be left until the last week. This quiz turns it into a card box: question, your own estimate, answer with an explanation — and what sticks comes back less often.
The questions are ordered by grade, from 9th kyu to dan. If you are already past that, the expert mode holds just as many questions again, going beyond the exam syllabus.
How it works
- Choose a grade — 9th kyu to dan, or go straight to expert mode.
- Read the question and judge yourself: knew it, or didn't.
- Turn the card. Every answer comes with an explanation, not just a keyword.
- What sticks comes back less often; what you miss comes back sooner.
There are two further modes for the dojo: an exam simulation that recreates the real thing, and a team duel for two groups — meant for the last twenty minutes of a training session.
Who is it for?
For anyone with a belt exam ahead of them, and for instructors who would rather not cram the theory part into the final week.
Expert mode is aimed at 1st kyu and above: it asks about history, terms and connections that appear in no exam regulation.

Privacy and technology
Runs entirely in your browser. Your progress stays on your device and is sent nowhere — no account, no sign-up, no ads, no tracking. The share menu puts the app on your home screen; after that it works without an internet connection as well.
Because nothing sits on a server, nothing can be fetched back from one: clear your browser data and your progress is gone. That is why More offers Create backup — a file you can keep and load again, on another device too.
Common questions
Does the question catalogue match my association?
It follows a Shotokan exam programme from 9th kyu to dan. Exam regulations differ between associations and styles, though the theory part overlaps heavily. When in doubt, your own association's regulation is the one that counts.
How does the exam simulation work?
It draws a selection from the chosen grade and puts the questions to you in one go — no turning cards in between, just like the real exam. The result comes at the end.
What is the team duel for?
For two groups in training. One question is on the table, both sides answer, the score runs along. It fills the last twenty minutes of a session, when nobody has the strength left for kihon anyway.
Where do I learn the Japanese terms?
Not here — this quiz tests exam knowledge. The language lives in Learn Japanese: dojo Japanese, the karate terms of your style and everyday Japanese, all with pronunciation.
What happens to my progress if I clear my browser?
It is gone — there is no server to fetch it back from. Safari clears a website's storage after seven days without a visit anyway. That is why every app here has Create backup: keep the file, load it again later, on another device if you like.
